Yachting NSW Try Sailing Day, - Sunday November 2nd 2008

Abbotsford 12 ft Flying Squadron is participating in this year’s Yachting New South Wales Try Sailing Day.

This is an excellent opportunity to showcase what we all spend our weekends doing. Members are encouraged to invite your friends, neighbours and family to participate.

On the day we will need volunteers to

  • Man runabouts
  • Man the canteen and BBQ
  • Skipper sabots to take out the participants. Also people to skipper the club’s Puffin Pacer to take out older participants.
  • People to meet and register participants

Also if anyone from the club is willing to take people out on their boat that would be good too.

Could anyone that can participate please contact Bruce Nicholson 0439 463 014. There will also be a sign-on sheet in the club this weekend.

Changes to the Sailing Instructions

The club recently made changes to the Sailing instructions governing races held at the club. The primary objective was to split the sailing instructions into two documents where one document describes just the rules relevant to competitors and another describing the rules governing the running of races by the club. The split means the sailing instructions for competitors are a much simpler document. The plan is to ultimately move the sailing instructions for competitors into the ISAF standard format.

In addition to the split the club took this oppurtunity to make some small changes to the rules. The changes were aimed at correcting some flaws found in the last couple of seasons and to promote competition now that the sizes of some of our fleets are small.

The following is a summary of the changes to the Sailing Instructions for competitors:

  • The Addition of PFD requirement in accordance with the legislation
  • Simplification of boat measurement rules.
  • The starter must be notified of changes to sail insignia.
  • The redundant rule regarding sail area was removed.
  • References to sailboards in the pointscore and club championship were removed.
  • Under the section regarding protests, we removws the words that effectively re-state the ISAF rule specifying that the protestee must be notified.

Summary of changes to RM:

  • Starting procedures have changed to allow ISAF rule 26 and deleting the reference to rule 30.1. This allows for less strict rules regarding boats being OCS (dip starts).
  • Change were made to the entries for races section to permit a sabot sailing outside of the permitted age range of the class to compete for the club championship. Also once a sabot has registered as 1up or 2up they must remain registered in that class for the season.
  • The sailboard reference in the pointscore rule was deleted.
  • The requirement that an average of three boats start for a championship to be awarded was relaxed.
  • Rules permitting merger of small fleets into the open class were created and permitting the merger of the 1up and 2up sabot fleets should the fleet sizes be small.
  • The rules were changed so that a race that is not abandoned but where no finishers completed the race, is still considered valid.

Open Positions

The 2008 AGM went smoothly and included some great discussion regarding future directions for the club. Unfortunately we still have a couple of place to fill and we are urgently seeking anybody who can help with these:

Liquor Licensee

The liquor licensee is responsible for serving alcohol behind the bar and for organising the purchase or drinks and snacks. An RSA is not essential but the the applicant must complete an RSA qualification to fill the position. The club will subsidise the completion of the RSA.

Canteen Co-ordinator

The canteen co-ordinator is responsible for organising food for the canteen and co-ordinating volunteers to help serve during lunchtime.

For more information or if you can help with these positions please contact Bruce Nicholson, Noel Hill or Gai Dewane.
